What is the most efficient table layout?

We did an experiment to see the maximum number of seats we could get into a 15m (45 foot) square room. Here are the results:

most efficient table layout

So it appears that circular tables are generally the most efficient use of space.

In an infinite size room:

  • A staggered (hexagonal) layout is 15% more efficient than an aligned (square) layout. But it depends on size and shape of the room whether the extra density makes up for the half-table gaps at the ends of the rows.
  • Tables of 8 are about 3% more space efficient than tables of 10. But it depends on the size and shape of the room whether you are able to get in enough additional small tables.

So, it depends! You can easily try some different table layouts in the PerfectTablePlan floor plan. See the new floor plan video (linked above) for more details.
